COMMUNITY EVENTS

Community Is Part of Mental Health

We live in a time when more of life is increasingly individualised. We’re often expected to manage our struggles independently, to be self-sufficient, resilient and responsible for our own wellbeing. But humans have never been designed to do everything alone.

Our mental health is shaped not only by what happens within us, but also by the quality of our relationships and the communities we belong to. Research increasingly shows just how important social connection is: around 1 in 6 people worldwide experience loneliness, with rates particularly high among adolescents and young adults. The WHO also reports that lonely people are around twice as likely to develop depression, while strong social connections are associated with better health and longer lives.

Community has traditionally provided many of the things we now try to create individually, belonging, support, shared experiences, perspective and a sense that we don’t have to navigate life alone.

At Sofia Mental Health, we want to bring some of that back. Our community events are an extension of our mental health work: spaces to meet people, build meaningful connections, share experiences and remember that support doesn’t only have to come from a therapy room.

WHAT WE OFFER

Public Events

Open, accessible events at a large scale that bring people together around mental health and wellbeing. These may include talks, awareness events and conversations around topics that affect everyday life. Our talks translate psychological concepts into language people can actually understand and relate to.

  1. Interactive Workshops

Our workshops are designed for smaller spaces and groups, to have more engaging, practical and interactive events. These sessions may include guided discussions, reflection and practical activities. The aim is to make mental health easier to understand, easier to talk about, and more relevant to everyday life.

FAQs

Do I need to have a mental-health concern to attend a community event?

No. Our community spaces are for anyone who wants to learn, reflect, ask questions, or have more open conversations about mental health and everyday life.

What happens at a community event or group session?

It depends on the format. A session may include a talk, guided discussion, psychoeducation, reflection or practical activities. The aim is to create a space where people can learn something useful and have an honest conversation around it.

Can I ask questions or share my own experiences?

Absolutely. Questions, different perspectives and personal experiences are welcome. You can participate in the way that feels comfortable for you.

What kinds of topics do you explore?

We create sessions around topics that connect with everyday life, such as emotional intelligence, relationships, boundaries, stress and anxiety, self-esteem, social media and mental health, coping with change and building resilience.

Will I be expected to agree with everyone else?

No. Community spaces are meant to make room for different experiences and perspectives. We want people to be able to think, question and engage with ideas openly while keeping the conversation respectful.

Can Sophia Mental Health create a session for our organisation, college or community?

Yes. We work with schools, organisations, colleges, community groups and other spaces to create programmes suited to their audience, topic and needs.
